Seitan is easy to cook with!
It can be used rather than meat in virtually any recipe.
However it does cook a little differently than meat.
Here are some tips from our family to help make all your Seitan dishes delicious!
1. Fat is good. Unlike meat, Seitan does not contain much internal moisture or fat. When meat is cooked fat and moisture is released
and often needs to be poured off to avoid a greasy meal. Seitan works in the opposite way- we add fat and moisture while cooking to insure
flavorful, juicy results. This is why all of our Seitan products come with a gourmet sauce packet- it is just the right balance of fat and moisture!
Seitan can afford a little fat-because it is so much lighter than meat to begin with. We recommend using olive oil or other heart healthy oils.
2. Food Safety is so much easier! Unlike meat, Seitan has no dangerous pathogens like e-coli or salmonella to cook out.
In fact, our Seitan is safe to eat right out of the package (many people love it like that). Of course, because Seitan is a high protein cooked food,
it is necessary to follow basic time and temperature limits for cooked vegetables but not those for meat.
3. Cast Iron is best. We have heard so many stories from folks who became vegetarian and got rid of all of their cast iron cookware. So sad!
Well seasoned cast iron is absolutely the best way to cook Seitan. We even use a cast iron grate on our charcoal grill.
Non stick pans will work too but not as well.
We do not suggest browning Seitan in stainless steel, aluminum or copper cookware. It will stick and you will not be happy.
A well seasoned griddle (like those you find in commercial kitchens) can be wonderful too.
4. Be creative! Between our Chops, Bites, Sliced & Ground Seitan you can pretty much use Seitan rather than red meat or pork in any dish you
can imagine! Season it up, marinate it, slow smoke it in your fancy smoker or get exotic with your favorite ethnic cookbook! The possibilities
5.We can learn from you too! If you have a good tip, recipe or idea for cooking with our Seitan, we would love to hear it!
